Abstract: This article, published by DZone and written by InfluxData Founder and CTO Paul Dix, calls for a reality check regarding what it takes to develop and drive the success of open-source software: i.e., continued investment, which must somehow be subsidized. He notes that “OSS is always subsidized either through people’s free time or some other successful business” and that “building a business in the open-source infrastructure space has become much harder over the last few years because of the cloud providers continued march across the entire infrastructure software market.” He discusses various approaches to open source, among them open core, in which a company produces an open-source project (the core) and then creates proprietary software in or around that project.
